Batch Codes, QR Codes & Tamper Seals — A Buyer’s Checklist
The three small features that do most of the heavy lifting on authentic nicotine pouch tins are the batch code, the QR code (where it exists), and the tamper seal. Get a clean read on those three and you’ve ruled out most counterfeit tins instantly.
Batch codes
Every legitimate tin has a batch code — a short alphanumeric string identifying the production run. Check that it’s printed in a consistent font with the rest of the small print, clearly visible (usually on the base or rear), and not smudged, peeling off a sticker, or duplicated identically across completely different buys. If the brand offers a batch-lookup tool, the code should resolve to a real production run. Counterfeiters often reuse the same batch code across thousands of tins because they only have one printing plate — so the same code on two tins bought weeks apart is a strong signal.
QR codes
A growing number of brands now print authenticity QR codes that open a brand-controlled page confirming the product, its batch, and sometimes its production date. Check the QR scans to a domain owned by the brand (not a third-party site), that the page returns specific batch information rather than a generic “thanks for buying” landing page, and that the QR isn’t a sticker placed over another sticker. A QR that goes nowhere, or to a generic page, is a red flag.
Tamper seals
The tamper seal — the thin plastic or foil band around the join between lid and base — is the single most reliable physical authenticity cue. Look for a clean, factory-applied seal that breaks the first time you open the tin, no signs of having been peeled or reapplied, brand-specific designs (some brands emboss or print on the seal itself), and no air gap or visible glue residue. Counterfeit seals are often the weakest link in a fake.
Quick checklist
- Batch code present, sharp, and brand-consistent?
- QR code (if applicable) scans to the brand’s real domain?
- Tamper seal intact and factory-applied?
- Best-before date in the future and in UK format?
- UK importer or distributor details on the tin?
Five seconds of checks before you open the tin. Five seconds that filter out most counterfeit product circulating in the UK.
