Spotting Fake VELO, ZYN and Nordic Spirit Packaging

VELO, ZYN and Nordic Spirit dominate UK nicotine pouch shelves — and they dominate the counterfeit market for exactly the same reason. Each brand has its own packaging quirks, and the fakes get those quirks wrong in surprisingly consistent ways.

VELO (British American Tobacco)

VELO uses a small, rounded plastic tin with a matte finish and a bold sans-serif logo. Authenticity tells: a crisp, evenly-weighted “VELO” wordmark (fakes render it slightly bolder or with a thinner crossbar on the “E”); strength shown as a dot count plus a milligram value; a “Manufactured for British American Tobacco UK Limited” line with a London address; and a clean moulded recycling symbol on the base.

ZYN (Philip Morris International)

ZYN tins are typically wider and shallower than VELO, with a glossy finish and a strong colour-coded flavour system. Look for the “ZYN” logo in a specific bold cut (fakes use a close-but-not-exact free font), a “manufactured by” line referencing PMI or a named distributor, consistent colour saturation around the rim, and a QR code that resolves to a PMI domain.

Nordic Spirit (JTI)

Nordic Spirit leans into a clean Scandinavian aesthetic — light backgrounds, generous whitespace, a small wordmark. The wordmark uses a custom serif; fakes use a Times New Roman lookalike that misses the subtle ligatures. Genuine tins carry a JTI UK Ltd address, each pouch has a faint logo print (counterfeit pouches are usually plain white), and the tamper seal sits flush against the lid with no air gap.

The universal red flags

• Missing or non-UK importer details.
• Best-before dates in odd formats (e.g. American MM-DD-YY).
• Spelling errors in the small print.
• Pouches inside that don’t match the brand’s standard size or texture.
• A barcode that doesn’t scan, or scans to a different product.

If you’re ever unsure, compare side-by-side with a tin from a known authorised retailer. The differences will usually jump out within seconds.
